FORT WORTH, Texas -- Kate Morrell and Jordan McDonald finished with nine kills each Friday afternoon, but the UAB volleyball team lost, 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 27-25), to Ohio in the first match at the TCU Nike Invitational.
The Blazers will be back on the court tonight at 7 p.m. against the host Horned Frogs in a match that will be televised live by the Mountain West Sports Network (The Mtn.). Fans can also follow the action through Gametracker live stats at uabsports.com.
In Friday's first match, Ohio's Sue Jacobi led all players with 13 kills in a contest that was more defensive in nature than offensive.
The teams combined for 22 total blocks -- 14 by Ohio and eight by UAB -- in the three-set match, and neither team hit for a percentage higher than .222 in a single set. The Bobcats ended the match hitting .167, while UAB checked in at .120.
UAB's Sam Serley and Ohio's Katie Post each managed six total blocks to lead all players.
UAB was in the first and third sets right until then end. The Blazers even held three set points in the third frame before Ohio rallied to win six of the final seven points to close out the match.
UAB out-dug Ohio, 53-50, led by a match-best 17 digs from libero Heather Thomas. The Bobcats put two players in double-digit digs, Meryl Bender with 14 and Jacobi with 13.
Blazer setter Alison Woods came up just short of her third double-double in four matches with 20 assists and eight digs. Fellow setter Becca Howard was also close with 10 assists and seven digs.
