BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- With its season-opening game against Florida Atlantic now less than a week away, the UAB football team worked out for two hours Saturday night under the lights at Legion Field.
"It was good to get over here and have a chance to practice," Blazers' head coach Neil Callaway said. "I think this is the fifth time we've practiced here during camp, but it's the first time we've had the chance to work under the lights. We wanted to start at the time we'll kick off Thursday (vs. FAU). Hopefully, we'll get some benefit out of it."
An afternoon shower brought the most pleasant temperatures that the Blazers have practiced in during camp. After practice, Callaway said he was pleased with the effort he saw Saturday night.
"We had a lot of good effort, good enthusiasm and a lot of energy out there tonight," he said.
The practice fell on what typically would be a Monday situation if UAB was playing on a Saturday. Monday is generally an off day for the team, but since the Blazers did not practice on Friday, Callaway had his team on the field Saturday night. And they'll practice again Sunday afternoon and go through what usually would be considered a `Tuesday' type practice.
The Blazers will kick off the season Thursday, Sept. 2 when they play host to Florida Atlantic. Kickoff at Legion Field is set for 7:00 p.m.
The game will be carried live on the Blazers ISP Sports Network. David Crane, John Whitcomb and Otis Leverette will call the action. The broadcast will start at 5:30 p.m. Thursday with the pregame show from Legion Field.
