ATLANTA, Ga. - The UAB men's soccer team settled for a 2-2 draw against Georgia State on Wednesday night at Panther Stadium. Sophomore Kofi Gyawu and junior Chris Williams each scored to help the Blazers remain unbeaten in exhibition play (1-0-1).
The Blazers held a 2-1 lead for most of the second half, but allowed a Panther goal with six minutes remaining in regulation.
Georgia State took an early lead at the 13:30 mark when midfielder Joe Castaldo scored to give his team the one-goal lead. Costaldo's goal came off a rebound, after UAB goalkeeper Tucker Stone made the initial save.
The Blazers would respond in the 31st minute when freshman Kofi Gyawu scored his second goal in as many games during the preseason. The Atlanta, Ga. native scored when he drilled a header off a pass from sophomore Reed Matte and past Panther goalkeeper C.J. Cochran.
UAB would take its first lead of the game just 10 minutes after halftime, at the 55.17 mark. Junior Chris Williams, who led the Blazers with three shots on goal in the contest, blistered a shot from outside the 18-yard box and into the far corner to give his team a 2-1 lead.
The score would remain that way until the 84th minute when Georgia State defender Ayokunie Lumpkin scored off a rebound, after Blazer goalkeeper Chase Bullman made the initial save.
The teams played evenly throughout the night as the Blazers owned one more shot (11-10) and corner kick (4-3) than the Panthers in the contest. Cochran played the entire 90 minutes, making five saves, while the UAB keepers combined to make four saves.
UAB will close out the preseason with its first home contest this year when it welcomes No. 22 UNC Wilmington to West Campus Field. The contest is set to begin at 7 p.m.
Prior to the game, the Blazer men's soccer coaches and players will put on a free youth soccer clinic. For everyone who attends the free clinic, they will receive a free t-shirt, free dinner and a free game ticket. The clinic begins at 4 p.m. at West Campus Field.
