2010 USTFCCCA All-Academic Team
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- UAB's Rhiannon Johns and Nora Mehl were named to the 2010 Division 1 All-Academic Track & Field team Thursday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). A record total of 557 student-athletes representing 152 institutions compose the group.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field team, a student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either the NCAA Division I Indoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard or participated in the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships (including preliminary rounds) in their respective event.
Johns owns a perfect 4.0 grade point average in her major of mathematics. The sophomore distance runner was named to the 2010 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV track and field/cross country second team and selected to the Conference USA All-Academic team.
The Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada product is a two-time Conference USA Academic Medal recipient and C-USA Honor Roll selection, and has received UAB Presidential Honors (4.0 GPA) and been named to UAB's Dean's List every semester of her career.
Johns qualified for the East Preliminary Round of the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter events. She recorded a time of 36:08.85 in the 10,000-meter to place 22nd. She clocked 17:01.19 to place 11th in her heat and 28th overall in the 5,000-meter.
She became a conference champion in the 10,000-meter at the 2010 C-USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships after recording a time of 35:07.25. She ran the top 10,000-meter time in C-USA last spring with a personal-record 34:40.30 at the Stanford Invitational. Also at the C-USA Championships, she ran a personal-record 16:48.38 to place seventh in the 5,000-meter.
Mehl, a psychology major, owns a 3.85 grade point average. The junior high jumper was named a 2009-10 C-USA Scholar Athlete Award winner. She is a two-time C-USA All-Academic Team selection and a three-time C-USA Academic Medal recipient. She also is a two-time C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll selection and has been named to UAB's Dean's List every semester of her career.
During the indoor season, the Rottweil, Germany product was named C-USA's Athlete of the Week after winning the high jump and provisionally qualifying for the NCAA meet with 1.81 meters (5-11.25) at the LSU Twilight meet. She provisionally qualified for the NCAA meet again after scoring 3,774 points in the pentathlon to take the title at the C-USA Indoor Championships and become a two-time league champion.
Mehl kicked off the outdoor season with a first-place finish in the high jump at the Alabama Relays after leaping 1.79 meters (5-10.50). Her jump qualified her for the East Preliminary Round of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, where she placed 20th with 1.74 meters (5-8.50).
