BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB women's basketball team earned Conference USA's Sport Academic Award for having the highest grade point average among the league's women's hoops teams during the 2009-10 academic year. The Blazers posted a 3.034 to receive the team's first conference academic award.
The conference annually recognizes the school in each sport that earns the highest GPA.
During the 2009-10 season, nine members of the women's basketball team were named to the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll for maintaining at least a 3.0 GPA. Sophomore guard Nakia McDaniel and junior forward TaRonda Randall each received the C-USA Academic Medal for maintaining above a 3.75 GPA, with Randall posting a team-best GPA of 3.86 as a political science major. Additionally, senior guard Amanda Peterson received recognition for her academic achievements as she was named to the C-USA All-Academic Team.
Women's basketball joins the Blazer baseball team as the only UAB teams to earn the league honor since the award's inception five years ago. The baseball team won the award for the 2007-08 season.
