BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The NCAA has granted the UAB men's basketball team a waiver from a ban on post-season play related to academic performance, conditioned upon UAB demonstrating full implementation of its APR Improvement Plan and upon the team attaining an APR of 950 for 2009-10.
UAB Athletics Director Brian Mackin said that based on this year's grades the team will surpass the 950 mark.
UAB accepted the NCAA's imposition of a reduction in scholarships (two) and practice time (16 hours a week instead of 20) for men's basketball. These reductions will be administered in the 2010-11 academic year due to the team's multi-year APR score through 2008-09.
"We are very appreciative of the NCAA's response to the way we have transformed our approach to academics in the athletics department," said Mackin. "Everyone--from our faculty and administration to our athletics staff, coaches and players--is unified on academics being our top priority. There is a sense of shared accountability and a commitment to follow-through, and it is working."
The Blazers' football program was granted relief from all penalties related to academic performance, conditioned upon a 2009-2010 APR of 925 and full implementation of the APR Improvement Plan. The team had back-to-back scores of 945 or above, and had a 951 at mid-year 2009.
All of UAB's other teams have above 925 in the multi-year rate.
On June 9, the NCAA will release 2008-09 APR scores for all teams nationally.
