UAB Senior Student-Athletes Honored at Annual Banquet

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB Athletic Department held its annual senior banquet on Tuesday evening, honoring senior student-athletes from 13 different sports. Athletic director Brian Mackin awarded 14 scholarships in honor of individuals who have been instrumental in the development of the athletic program.
Women's soccer defender Danielle Blair took home three honors, receiving the Student-Athletic Advisory Committee Award, Gene Bartow Scholarship and the award for the top female GPA. Blair also served as the keynote speaker for the evening.
Football had four student-athletes honored with scholarships. Daniel Seahorn received the George "Snoozy" Jones Scholarship, Jared Koechner the Lillyan Fahy Scholarship, Mark Ferrell the Harry "The Hat" Walker Memorial Scholarship and Brandon Heath the Kirk Tuck Endowed Athletic Award.
A pair of baseball seniors earned scholarships as well. Jonathan Merritt and Luke Stewart received the Dorsey-Gallichio Endowed Athletic Scholarship and Ralph Holmes Endowed Award, respectively.
Men's basketball also had a pair of honorees in Howard Crawford and George Drake. Crawford was awarded the Barabara and Jerry Hallerman Endowed Scholarship, while Drake received the Mervyn Goldstein Memorial Scholarship.
Individuals from women's basketball, women's tennis, track and men's soccer also were honored during the evening. Fatiha Salaam (women's basketball) received the Mildred Hamner Scholarship Endowment Award, Ceylan Engin (women's tennis) the Jerry D. Young Memorial Scholarship and Timara McMillan (track) the National Alumni Society Women's Athletic Scholarship, while Dean Sorrell (men's soccer) received the award for top male GPA.
The athletic department also awarded three honorary letters to Randy and Cindy Godwin and Russell Moore. The Godwins have been season ticket holders for several years and have enriched the lives of student-athletes through their charitable contributions. Moore has served in the equipment room for 19 years and has become an avid supporter of UAB athletics.
