BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's tennis team will take on fourth-seeded SMU in first round play Friday morning at the Conference USA Championship in Houston, Texas.
The Blazers (12-8, 3-1 C-USA) and Mustangs (14-10, 2-1 C-USA) will meet at 11:00 a.m. in the event hosted by Rice University. UAB is the No. 5 seed in the tournament while SMU comes in as the fourth-seeded team.
UAB dropped its only match played last week, falling 5-2 to No. 29-ranked Alabama on Wednesday at the Lakeshore Tennis Center.
SMU, meanwhile, will enter the tournament as one of the league's hottest teams, having won four matches in a row and seven of its last eight. Included in that streak are wins over then-No. 34 BYU and then-No. 63 TCU. The Mustangs moved into the ITA national rankings this week and are currently at No. 72 nationally.
Tulsa, ranked No. 36 nationally, is the top-seeded team in the C-USA Championship. Other seeds are as follows: No. 2 - Rice; No. 3 - UCF; No. 4 - SMU; No. 5 - UAB; No. 6 - East Carolina; No. 7 - Southern Miss; No. 8 - Memphis; and No. 9 - Tulane.
The tournament began Thursday as Memphis defeated Tulane, 4-1.
