BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- UAB freshman baseball player John Frost has been named the Conference USA Co-Hitter of the Week after hitting .643 and helping the Blazers to a 3-1 record last week. Frost shares the honor with East Carolina's Cam Freeman.
Frost recorded multiple hits in all four of UAB's games last week as he went 9-for-14 at the plate. The Decatur, Ala., product also recorded at least one RBI in each contest and finished the week with a .647 on-base percentage and a .786 slugging percentage.
"John has jumped in and immediately been consistently good for us," UAB head coach Brian Shoop said. "He's hit fourth or fifth in our order every game, so we've thrown him right into the heart of the lineup. We're thrilled he's here, and he's going to have a great career at UAB. He's one of our centerpieces for the future."
Frost had a two-RBI double as part of a decisive six-run second inning Wednesday against Kennesaw State and an RBI single as part of a four-run sixth that gave the Blazers the lead for good Friday against Eastern Illinois. His RBI single Sunday against the Panthers gave UAB the lead in the sixth inning.
Frost, who has started seven games as the UAB designated hitter and two at third base, has now hit safely in six consecutive games. He has posted multiple hits in five of UAB's nine games this season.
Freeman helped East Carolina to a perfect 3-0 week, which included capturing the Seventh Annual Keith LeClair Classic crown. On the week, he hit .542 with two home runs and six RBI.
Houston right-hander Michael Goodnight was named the Conference USA Pitcher of the Week after shutting out No. 3 Texas for seven innings Saturday.
UAB (6-3) has won six of its past seven games and returns to action Tuesday at 3 p.m. CT. The Blazers will host Alabama A&M at Young Memorial Field to conclude a nine-game homestand before heading to San Diego, Calif., for the San Diego State Invitational this weekend.
