Harris Earns All-Conference USA Honors

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- UAB freshman guard Jala Harris was named to the All-Conference USA Second Team, as announced Saturday by the league office. Harris is the only freshman among the fifteen players to receive all-conference honors.
Harris leads the Blazers with 16.4 points and 3.2 assists a game. She is the fifth-leading scorer in C-USA overall and ranks third in scoring for league games at 18.3 points per game. In the Mideast Region, she ranks 11th overall and third among freshmen in scoring.
The 5-6 guard's biggest game of the season came against Marshall, when she scored 40 points, setting a new record for a C-USA freshman. She became just the third player in league history to crack the 40-point mark in a conference contest. Harris has reached double figures in 11 of the last 13 contests and 21 times on the season.
Harris is currently tied for UAB's freshman assist record with 89 this season, and she came up just two points shy of tying the C-USA freshman record for points in a season, set by USF's Jessica Dickson with 295 points in 2004.
The Madison, Ala., native has earned five C-USA Freshman of the Week honors this year, including a record four consecutive from Jan. 11 to Feb. 1.
Harris' award marks the fifth year in a row that UAB has had at least one player named to the all-conference teams.
Harris and the Blazers open the Conference USA Championship on Monday against host and 11th-seeded Tulsa. The two teams tip off at 6 p.m. CST at the Reynolds Center in Tulsa, Okla.
