Peterson Named C-USA Spirit of Service Honoree

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Junior guard Amanda Peterson was named the Confererence USA Winter Spirit of Service honoree for UAB as announced on Wednesday by Commissioner Britton Banowsky.
The C-USA Spirit of Service Award is designed to recognize the community service efforts of the league's student-athletes, based upon significant community service, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport. The Spirit of Service award is presented three times throughout the season, with Wednesday's honorees representing Conference USA's winter sports: basketball, indoor track and field and swimming and diving.
Peterson has excelled off the court, landing on the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll twice in addition to receiving the C-USA Academic Medal in 2009. The Homewood, Ala., native has been one of the leaders among her peers in the community as well, participating in Reading to Classrooms at Riverchase Elementary School and serving as an FCA speaker at Chelsea Middle School. Peterson also contributes to the McWane Center Mini Camps during summers and volunteers at the Ronald McDonald House and Race for the Cure.
The 5-10 guard also was a staple in the starting line-up for the UAB women's basketball team this season and helped the Blazers to the C-USA Championship title game for the first time since 2000. Peterson set a school single-season record with 83 3-pointers and moved into second on the career list for treys with 216. She was the team's third-leading scorer at 10.2 points a game.
