UAB Baseball Defeats Alabama State Tuesday, 16-6

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Nine different UAB players recorded at least one hit Tuesday night, and the Blazer baseball team scored 10 times in the third inning on the way to a 16-6 win over Alabama State at Young Memorial Field.
UAB (14-8) returns to action Wednesday, hosting 23rd-ranked Alabama at Regions Park in Hoover at 6:30 p.m. CT. Tickets, priced at $10 for adults and $6 for kids (ages 4-17), are available by visiting uabsports.com, by calling (205) 975-UAB1 or at the Regions Park ticket office starting Wednesday at 5 p.m. UAB students will be admitted free with a valid ID.
Wednesday's game with Alabama will air live in the Birmingham area on WJOX-AM 690. Gametracker live stats and All-Access streaming video will also be available online at uabsports.com.
In Tuesday's win over Alabama State (5-8), Jonathan Merritt went 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored to lead UAB offensively. Jamal Austin and Jacob German also scored twice and drove in a pair of runs.
UAB's Trey Waltman pitched four shutout innings, striking out five and allowing just one hit before turning things over to the bullpen. Waltman did not walk a batter and faced just one over the minimum in his outing.
Corey Washington took the loss for Alabama State after being charged with 11 runs, including all 10 in the third inning.
UAB sent 14 batters to the plate in the third, collecting five hits, walking three times and having two batters hit by pitch. The scoring was highlighted by a two-RBI single from Andrew Manning, a two-RBI double from Austin and a two-RBI triple from Merritt. The Blazers later tacked on five runs in the seventh inning.
Alabama State scored its six runs over the final four innings, but five of those runs were unearned as the result of UAB errors. Drew Quinney, Draveon Moreleand and Jorrell Fredericks each drove in two runs for the Hornets, which finished with five hits as a team. Ron James scored twice for Alabama State.
Blazer pitchers finished with 14 combined strikeouts in the game with Colin McMurry and Mikael Saway each throwing two innings of relief and recording four of their six outs via strikeout. The staff combined to walk just two batters in the game. UAB batters, on the other hand, walked eight times.
