Men's Golf Team Closes Play At the Furman Intercollegiate

GREENVILLE, S.C. - The UAB men's golf team closed play at the 41st annual Furman Intercollegiate on Sunday, finishing the three-day, 54-hole event tied for 16th overall with a team score of 917 (310-301-306).
The Blazers were led on the event by senior twin brothers Adam and Blake West. Adam finished the tournament tied for 36th overall with an 11-over par 227 (76-76-75). Blake closed play two strokes back of his brother with a 229 (77-74-78) to finish tied for 51st.
Senior John Darby carded a team-best round of 74 during the final 18 holes, and finished tied for 60th with a 230 (78-78-74), while senior Cathal O'Malley tied for 91st overall after carding a 235 (83-73-79). Sophomore Jason Shufflebotham rounded out UAB with a 237 (79-79-79) on the par-72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Course.
The Clemson men's golf team carded a final round 282 to rally from a three-stroke deficit on Sunday and claim the overall title in the 24-team field. Chattanooga's Steven Fox drained a birdie putt on his final hole to share individual medalist honors with the Tigers' Ben Martin at six-under par.
The Tigers (289-294-282=865), three strokes behind Chattanooga (289-291-299=879) entering Sunday's final round, finished 11 strokes ahead of the rest of the field over the final 18 holes to take a 14-stroke victory over the Mocs. Furman (305-290-298=893) placed third while Western Carolina, Kennesaw State and Old Dominion rounded out the top five.
UAB will waste no time returning to action on the links, as it travels San Diego, Calif. to compete at the Barona Collegiate Cup on March 26-27.
