BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB baseball team continues its nine-game home stand Wednesday with a 3 p.m. CT first pitch against Kennesaw State at Young Memorial Field.
The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday but was postponed by one day because of inclement weather in the Birmingham area.
UAB (3-2) enters the midweek contest in search of its fourth straight win after taking the final three games of its four-game weekend series from Ball State. The Blazers swept a doubleheader from the Cardinals on Saturday and then came from behind for a 6-5 victory on Sunday.
Through five games this season, shortstop Jonathan Merritt is leading UAB with a .364 batting average and eight RBI. Four of those eight came on a seventh-inning grand slam in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. Freshman John Frost is second on the team with six runs driven in, including the game-winning hit against Ball State in Sunday's series finale.
UAB right-hander Mitch Kloskowski will take the mound Wednesday for his second appearance. Kloskowski, who missed most of last season because of injury, saw his first action in a year in the Ball State series and allowed just one run over three innings.
Kennesaw State (1-6) is slated to start left-hander Kelly Holt. The freshman has pitched only one and two-thirds innings on the season, allowing two runs on three hits.
The Owls went 1-2 over the weekend against Samford, winning the series opener 11-6 before dropping the final two games by scores of 9-7 and 5-3. Catcher Drew Fowlkes paces Kennesaw State with a .385 batting average and two home runs in the early going, while third baseman Peyton Hart owns a team-high seven RBI.
Kennesaw State is coming off a 30-22 record in 2009 and a second-place finish in the Atlantic Sun Conference.
Wednesday's meeting is the first of two this season between UAB and Kennesaw State. The teams are also scheduled to play March 23 in Kennesaw, Ga.
