BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- UAB had several athletic teams visit the Birmingham VA Medical Center as part of the National Salute to Hospitalized Veterans Week last week. The veterans were visited by the UAB Golden Girls on Monday and the baseball team on Tuesday. The volleyball team and the cheerleaders made the trip on Wednesday, while the football and men's basketball teams visited on Thursday.
National Salute to Hospitalized Veterans Week is an annual event. It started Feb. 8 and ran through Feb. 14. The event was created as an official VA program in 1978.
The theme for this year's event was "Heartfelt Thanks To America's Heroes." The purpose of this national program is to pay tribute to and express appreciation to America's veterans, to increase community awareness of the role of the VA medical facility and to encourage citizens to visit hospitalized veterans and to become involved as volunteers of their local VA.
UAB participated in the event for the fifth consecutive year as a part of the ongoing community service initiatives by the UAB Athletic Department.
