Blazer fans,
As we brace for Winter Storm 2010...or at least a couple inches of the white stuff...we also look forward to a HUGE weekend for the Green and Gold. Mike Davis and company will have a full week between games after no midweek game last night. Both the men and women will be in action at Bartow Arena this weekend, and I hope you're making plans to be with us.
I would imagine the Blazer men have enjoyed a little down time this week. If you have seen the Blazers at all this season, you know just how hard this team plays, night in and night out...win or lose. It's very difficult for a team to put that type of effort into each and every game and not get a little tired. Let's hope this open date will provide a little extra energy for the final month of the regular season. It's also nice to have a little extra time to get ready for Saturday night's game with Marshall. The Thundering Herd comes to town after scoring over 100 points in each of its last two games, and you know Marshall will be itching for a little payback after UAB escaped Huntington three weeks ago with a two-point, last-second win.
The Blazers are no longer in first place in Conference USA, but the Green and Gold STILL have the highest RPI of any team in the league. Seven regular season games remain, and there is an awful lot left to play for. A championship is still very much in the picture, as is an NCAA Tournament berth. If the Blazers continue to play as they have, and take care of business as they have for most of the season, there's no reason to think this team won't be rewarded come March. Of course, winning the league and/or winning the C-USA Tournament in Tulsa will make life even easier!
Tip time on Saturday night is set for 7 PM...no television for the game, so come on out to Bartow Arena. Our pre-game coverage on the network starts at 6:30 PM. Speaking of the network, we'd like to welcome WPAS-FM (89.1) in Mobile to the Blazers ISP Sports Network. Fans in the Port City and surrounding areas will be able to follow the remainder of the hoops season, plus the 2010 football season. Thanks, and welcome aboard!
I mentioned it's a big weekend for both the men and the women. As it should be, the ladies will get things started. Audra Smith's team has spent, seemingly, the last two months on the road. The Blazer women will be at home for two huge games this weekend, and one huge event. Tomorrow night's game against UCF is the "Pink Zone" game promoting breast cancer awareness. You may remember last year's event drew a record crowd of over 5,500. It sure would be nice to top the number from a season ago, and proceeds from the evening will go to the Coach Gene Bartow Fund at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center. There will be a massive silent auction on the main concourse throughout the game, and breast cancer survivors will be honored and recognized all night long. The first 500 fans walking through the doors will receive a free t-shirt and shaker. Put on your pink and come out to support the Blazers and a wonderful cause! The auction will begin at 6 PM, and the game will tip at 7 PM.
After the men take to the hardwood on Saturday night, the Blazer women will return to action on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Eagles of Southern Miss will come to town for a 2 PM tip-off.
Well, I guess it's time to head to the grocery store...have to pick up those eggs, bread and milk! Have a great weekend...stay warm (inside Bartow Arena)...and GO BLAZERS!!!
