BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Jamarr Sanders scored 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead UAB to its fourth straight victory with a 79-44 rout of George Washington on Monday night at Bartow Arena.
Aaron Johnson added 12 assists without a turnover to become the first Blazer in school history to record five double-figure assist games in a single season.
The Blazers (10-2) led by just three, 14-11, with 12:30 remaining before half, but went on a 24-8 run over the next 11 minutes to take a commanding 19-point lead at 38-19 and never looked back. UAB entered halftime with a 16-point lead, 38-22.
UAB would extend its lead to as many as 36 points, 77-41, before emptying its bench.
The Blazers shot 54.9 percent from the floor (28 of 51), including 14 for 29 from behind the arc (48.3 percent). The 14 treys were one shy of tying the school record for three-pointers made in a game. Furthermore, UAB finished the contest with 25 assists on its 28 made field goals for the night.
Dexter Fields scored 17 off the bench, while Ovie Soko added 14 and Cameron Moore 10 for the Blazers, who have won four in a row and eight of their last nine games.
Joseph Katuka and Dwayne Smith scored eight points apiece to lead the Colonials (5-6), who were 18 of 54 from the field (33.3 percent), including 3 of 16 from 3-point range (18.8 percent).
The 44 points scored by the Colonials was their lowest offensive output since a 63-38 loss to Saint Louis on Feb. 13, 2008.
Johnson now has recorded 524 assists for his career. He is just 74 assists shy of the school's all-time assist record.
The Blazers will have nine days before travelling to take on No. 1-ranked Duke Blue Devils in Cameron Indoor Stadium on Wedensday, Jan. 5. The contest will be televised live on ESPN2 with a tip time slated for 7 p.m. ET (6 p.m. CT).
