BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Sophomore guard Jala Harris led all scorers with 20 points and senior guard Amanda Peterson added 18 as the UAB women's basketball team breezed past Miles College in an exhibition contest, 87-43, on Monday night at Bartow Arena. The duo combined for eight of UAB's 10 3-pointers on the evening.
"I felt like we played very hard and with a lot of effort," head coach Audra Smith said. "We definitely need to work our rebounding. We've got to put our bodies on people and box them out. We're really going to have to buy in on the defensive end."
Junior guard LaShaunda Pratt also made an immediate impact in her debut for the Green and Gold. The Boston College transfer had 13 points, four assists and four steals in the contest.
Freshman forward Karisma Chapman earned her the start and contributed five points and seven rebounds, while junior forward TaRonda Randall came off the bench to lead the team with eight boards.
UAB never trailed in the contest, jumping out to a 17-point lead midway through the first half. The Blazers took a 27 point lead into the break and led by as many as 47 during the second half.
The Blazers finished the evening shooting 59 percent from beyond the arc, led by Peterson's five treys. Overall, UAB shot 48 percent from the field compared to Miles' 26 percent.
UAB opens the regular season on Sunday against Florida A&M. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. in Bartow Arena.
