BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB women's basketball team opens the 2010-11 season with an exhibition against Miles College on Monday at 7 p.m. in Bartow Arena.
The Blazers look to continue their momentum from the end of last season, as they won six of their last seven and made the Conference USA championship game for the first time since 2000. UAB finished 17-15 overall and 8-8 in C-USA.
The Blazers return 10 letterwinners from last year's squad, including four starters. After setting the school's single-season 3-point record last season with 83 treys, guard Amanda Peterson returns as the lone senior on the 2010-11 squad. The Homewood, Ala., native needs just 30 treys to break UAB's career 3-point record. Sophomore guard Jala Harris led all C-USA freshmen with 15.8 points per game last year and earned C-USA Freshman and Sixth Player of the Year honors, becoming the first player in league history to earn both accolades in the same season.
Miles finished the 2009-10 season with a record of 16-11 overall and 13-9 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). The Golden Bears return 10 letterwinners, including three starters from last year's squad.
The two teams have met once in the regular season. UAB won the contest, 91-45 in 1989 at Bartow Arena.
Following Monday's game, the team will be available for a free poster signing. It is also Student Family Night at Bartow Arena, with parents of UAB students receiving free admission when accompanied by a student with an ID.
UAB opens the regular season on Sunday, Nov. 14. The Blazers host Florida A&M for a 6 p.m. tipoff in Bartow Arena.
