BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB men's soccer team will play its final home contest of the 2010 regular season when it takes on the Marshall Thundering Herd on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. CT. It will mark the final home match for five Blazers who are each on track to graduate: Anthony King, Michal Mravec, Victor Sambade, Kevin Sawchak and Curtis Ushedo.
The match will have even more meaning as both teams are vying to be one of six teams to secure a spot in the 2010 C-USA Championship, held Nov. 12-14 in Memphis, Tenn. Both UAB and Marshall can secure a spot in this year's event with a victory Wednesday night.
UAB enters the C-USA showdown against Marshall sporting a 9-5-1 overall record and a 3-3 league mark. Four of the Blazers' five losses have come against teams ranked in the nation's top-25: then-No. 2 Virginia (L, 2-1 on Sept. 3), then-No. 6 SMU (L, 3-2 on Sept. 24), then-No. 20 South Carolina (L, 3-2 on Oct. 3) and then-No. 14 Tulsa (L, 1-0 (2ot) on Oct. 23).
The Blazers enter Wednesday's contest on a hot streak, with only one loss, a double-overtime setback to Tulsa, over their last five matches (3-1-1).
