BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Thirty UAB student-athletes from nine different Blazer teams are participating in a Read-A-Thon this Thursday and Friday at Glen Iris Elementary School as part of the National Education Association's (NEA) 89th Annual American Education Week.
Each day during the week of November 14-20, the NEA has encouraged spotlighting a different aspect of school life. Thursday's highlight was 'Educator for a Day,' whereby community leaders were invited to serve as educators to get a glimpse at a day in the life of a school employee.
The student-athletes are joining up with other local volunteers and dignitaries from around Birmingham to read books to classes of children from kindergarten to fifth grade.
When the week concludes, UAB Athletics will have sent readers from the Blazer football, men's and women's soccer, cross country, women's golf, women's tennis, baseball, softball and track and field teams. The track and field team will see the most representation with 10 individual student-athletes participating.
Glen Iris and UAB Athletics have enjoyed a long partnership due to the elementary school being located just a block away from the southwest corner of UAB's campus. With more than 800 students in grades K-5, the school has provided an opportunity for plenty of interaction between young students and UAB student-athletes serving as role models.
