BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB women's basketball team is set to open the 2010-11 season against Florida A&M on Sunday. The Blazers and Rattlers tip off at 6 p.m. in Bartow Arena.
Sunday's contest will mark Florida A&M's third trip to Bartow Arena. The Blazers are 2-0 all-time against the Rattlers and the two teams last met in 2000 when UAB captured an 86-58 win over Florida A&M. The Green and Gold also won the first meeting between the two teams in 1990, 85-56.
UAB (0-0) is coming off an 87-43 victory in an exhibition against Miles last Monday. Sophomore guard Jala Harris paced the Blazers with 20 points, while senior guard Amanda Peterson chipped in 18, including five 3-pointers. Peterson needs just 30 treys to break the school's career 3-point record.
The Blazers look to continue their momentum from the end of last season, as they won six of their last seven and made the C-USA Championship game for the first time since 2000. UAB finished last year 17-15 overall and 8-8 in C-USA.
The Rattlers (0-1) opened the season at Arkansas on Friday and suffered a 71-62 loss. Junior Tameka McKelton led FAMU with 21 points.
Florida A&M finished the 2009-10 campaign 18-11 and 9-7 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC). The Rattlers were led by McKelton with 15.1 points a game. Last year's leading rebounder in Qiana Donald also returns after averaging 11.0 boards a game during her sophomore campaign.
