BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB baseball program opened the early signing period Wednesday by inking Muscle Shoals, Ala., left-handed pitcher Dylan Munger to a National Letter of Intent.
Munger is coming off a strong junior season in which he posted a 7-1 record with a 1.29 ERA for Muscle Shoals High School on his way to first-team all-state recognition from the Alabama Sports Writers Association.
Also a first-team all-area selection by The (Florence) Times Daily, Munger tossed six complete games, including one shutout, in eight starts this past spring. He struck out 88 of the 231 batters he faced and walked just 27 while holding opponents to a .159 batting average.
"One of our priorities this recruiting season was to sign a top flight left-handed pitcher," UAB head coach Brian Shoop said. "We believe Dylan is one of the best in our state, so he is a great addition to our program. He not only has four years of high school experience and accomplishments, but we believe his best days are still ahead of him. When you can throw three pitches for strikes from the left side, you can do great things in college baseball."
Munger is entering his fourth season as a varsity starting pitcher at Muscle Shoals and has been chosen twice to participate in the Alabama Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Weekend.
As a sophomore in 2009, he earned honorable mention all-area honors from The Times Daily. That same year he was selected by the Baseball Factory player development program as the top pitching prospect at its Nashville, Tenn., Under Armour Tryout Event.
Currently a high school senior, Munger will enroll at UAB for the 2011-12 academic year and compete for the Blazers beginning with the 2012 season.
"Dylan is another committed and outstanding student who will earn a UAB degree and go on and represent our university in a first-class manner," Shoop said. "He is a special young man from a strong family and will fit in perfectly with our current players and program."
