STATELINE, Nev. -- Due to heavy rains and travel issues, the final round of the 2010 University of Nevada Wolf Pack Classic men's golf tournament was cancelled on Tuesday. Scores posted after the end of the second round Monday will stand as final scores.
"It was a cold, wet and pretty much miserable day out there," UAB head coach Alan Kaufman said. "We were able to get a couple holes in, but there was no chance of us finishing in time. Overall, we had some ups and downs. We just need to have better consistency all around for us to compete."
The Blazers opened the event with a score of 284 over the opening 18 holes, which was the second-best team total through round one. However, UAB followed that performance with a 309 during the second round, the lowest score of the afternoon, to finish with a 593.
Junior Tyler Hock paced the Blazers throughout Monday's opening 36 holes, finishing the day with a personal-best 36-hole score of one-over par 145 (72-73) on the par 72, 7,445-yard Edgewood-Tahoe Golf Course. Hock finished in 18th place overall, which not only marks the first time he has led the Blazers in an event but also the best individual finish of his career.
Another reason for UAB's fast start on Monday was the play of junior Jason Shufflebotham and redshirt freshman Thomas Sutton, both of whom recorded career-low marks through the opening 18 holes. Shufflebotham carded a two-under par 70, while Sutton's opening round of five-under 67 was not only his personal best, but also the best round by a Blazer since Adam West recorded a 67 in the final round of the 2008 Shoal Creek Intercollegiate.
However, both golfers stumbled during the second round. Shufflebotham would card a 78 to finish the day in a tie for 33rd with a 148. Meanwhile, Sutton carded an 83 during the afternoon round and finsihed 46th overall with a 150.
Sophomore Philip Kaiser finished tied for 66th with a 154 (75-79), while sophomore Hunter Hawkins, playing in his first career tournament for the Green and Gold, tied for 72nd with a 156 (77-79).
San Diego's score of 12-under 564 took first place, with tournament host Nevada closing strong in round two and posting even par 576. Fresno State, San Francisco and Washington State filled out the top five with scores of 577, 578 and 578.
Alex Ching of San Diego won the tournament's individual competition, shooting back-to-back under-par rounds of 67 in round one and 70 in round two.
The Blazers will return to action next week when they compete at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate on Oct. 11-12. The event, hosted by the University of Alabama, will be played at Old Overton golf course in Birmingham.
