BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB football team worked out for approximately an hour and a half Thursday morning in shorts and helmets. For the second time this week, the Blazers practiced at Birmingham-Southern due to wet field conditions at the on-campus facility and Magic City Classic preparations at Legion Field.
"The work we got done today was good and we still have tomorrow," UAB head coach Neil Callaway said. "We will probably do more than we usually do on Fridays."
Although rain has hindered UAB's practices this week, forcing the Blazers to travel to Birmingham-Southern Tuesday and Thursday and practice indoors Wednesday, Callaway hopes the shortened practices will benefit his team.
"We didn't get near the work in that we would have liked, but hopefully in some ways it will be good for us," Callaway said. "We do have a lot of people banged up, so maybe we will get some good out of it. We were in a physical ballgame last week and the guys played hard, and this is game eight. So it's just that time of year."
On Saturday, the Blazers will face a tough Southern Miss defense that is currently No. 3 in the country against the run.
"I just think they're pretty stout up front," Callaway said. "They do a good job, and they've got good personnel. They're a good defensive football team."
Callaway named senior WR Mike Jones as the offensive captain, junior DT Elliott Henigan as the defensive captain and junior LB Drew Luker as the special teams captain for Saturday's matchup.
Saturday's game in Hattiesburg, Miss., will kick off at 11 a.m. CT and be televised by CSS. The game will be carried live on the Blazers ISP Sports Network, airing locally on WJOX FM-94.5. David Crane, John Whitcomb and Otis Leverette will call the action with the pregame show beginning at 9:30 a.m. CT.
