BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB football team worked out for approximately an hour and a half Thursday morning in shorts and helmets as it made its final preparations for Saturday's contest at 24th-ranked Mississippi State.
"We're still working on Mississippi State stuff and fine-tuning a few things," head coach Neil Callaway said. "It was a typical Thursday practice."
Callaway will lead his squad to Starkville, Miss. for the second time in four seasons when the two team square off on the gridiron Saturday night. However, there are a number of things that have changed since the previous meeting, including the Bulldogs' coaching staff.
"They are a completely different offense and defense than the last time we played them," Callaway said. "We are further along than we were in 2007, but they are a lot better too. We have a lot of issues we still have to deal with, but we are certainly improved."
In the contest back in 2007, UAB led 13-9 after three quarters. But the Blazers could not get a fourth-quarter stop as State scored three touchdowns in the final eight minutes to secure a 30-13 victory.
Callaway selected senior running back Justin Brooks as this week's offensive captain, senior defensive end Bryant Turner as the defensive captain and junior safety Ferson Stafford as the special teams captain.
Saturday's game, which will be televised by ESPNU, is slated for a 6 p.m. CT kickoff in Starkville. The game will be carried live on the Blazers ISP Sports Network, airing locally on 107.7 WUHT-FM. David Crane, John Whitcomb and Otis Leverette will call the action with the pregame show beginning at 4:30 p.m. CT.
