Blazers Drop Sunday Contest To C-USA Foe Houston

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-17) decision to Houston in Conference USA action Sunday afternoon at Bartow Arena.
UAB's Sam Serley led all players with 11 kills, but Houston out-hit the Blazers .324 to .171 for the match. Marluci Toazzi paced the Houston attack with 10 kills as one of eight Cougar players to record at least eight.
The loss dropped UAB to 5-15 (2-6 C-USA), while Houston, which entered the weekend fourth in the league standings, improved to 12-9 (6-3 C-USA).
"Houston is a good team. They played well today, and we came out with no emotion," UAB head coach Kerry Messersmith said. "We were just flat all day and weren't ever able to get anything going."
In addition to having a better offensive day, Houston also faired better against the Blazer serves. The Cougars sided out at 75 percent for the match, while UAB sided out at 57 percent against Houston's serves.
UAB setter Alison Woods again ran a balanced offensive attack and finished the day with 30 assists. Houston setter Amber Brooks handed out a match-best 34 assists.
Defensively, the Blazers out-dug the Cougars 41-40 led by 13 digs from libero Heather Thomas. Houston libero Amanda Carson posted a match-high 16 digs.
Ally Slaughter added eight kills for UAB, followed by Jordan McDonald with seven and Michelle Uzoh with six. Stephanie Nwachukwu managed nine kills for Houston, while Candace Tryon and Lucy Charuk added eight each.
UAB is back in action next weekend, hitting the road again to face UCF on Friday night and UTEP on Sunday afternoon.
