BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Sophomore guard Jala Harris has been named to the 2010-11 All-Conference USA Preseason Team for women's basketball, as announced Thursday by the league office. Harris is the only sophomore listed among the six players.
Harris is coming off a prolific freshman campaign where she earned C-USA's Freshman and Sixth Player of the Year honors. She became the first player in league history to capture both honors in the same season and also was the only freshman named to the all-conference teams, earning second-team honors.
The Madison, Ala., native led all freshmen and ranked fifth overall in the conference with 15.8 points per game. Harris was just two points shy of tying the C-USA freshman record for points in a season, set by USF's Jessica Dickson with 295 points in 2004. She also set a UAB freshman record with 103 assists last season.
The most memorable game for the 5-6 guard came at Marshall, when she scored a C-USA freshman record 40 points. She became just the third player in league history to score 40 or more points in a conference game. Her performance marked the most points by a Blazer since Wanda Hightower scored 44 in 1982.
Harris and the Blazers open the 2010-11 season with an exhibition on Nov. 8 against Miles College at Bartow Arena at 7 p.m. UAB begins the regular season at home on Nov. 14, hosting Florida A&M at 6 p.m.
