BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB women's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie after double overtime against East Carolina on Sunday afternoon at West Campus Field. Junior forward Laura McCalla netted the lone goal for UAB as the Blazers moved to 6-6-2 overall and 2-2-2 in Conference USA.
"Sunday afternoon games are always tough," head coach Paul Harbin said. "They are more like survival matches. We had a little more of a spark in the second half and even in overtime had some chances we should've finished."
Both teams scored in the first half, with the Pirates (7-6-1, 2-3-1 C-USA) taking a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute when Amanda Malkiewicz punched in a goal. After a scrum in the box, Malkiewicz picked up the loose ball and fired it into the back of the net.
The Blazers netted the equalizer in the 41st minute when McCalla sent a long ball into the box. An ECU defender attempted to head the ball away, but it deflected off her head and into the net to make it 1-1.
UAB narrowly missed on several opportunities in the first half, forcing ECU goalkeeper Christiane Cordero to make four saves in the period and seven overall. UAB keeper Kate Blankenship made five stops in the game.
The two teams continued to battle through the second half, but neither was able to come up with a goal. In the first overtime, each team had one shot on frame and the Blazers had an open look in the second overtime as well, but were unable to capitalize.
East Carolina owned a 14-12 shot advantage, while UAB held a 7-3 corner advantage.
UAB hits the road next weekend, traveling to SMU and Tulsa. The Blazers face SMU Friday at 7 p.m. CT and conclude the weekend at Tulsa Sunday at 1 p.m. CT.
