BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Baseball summer league action has concluded for the six members of the UAB baseball program who spent the summer months playing across the country.
Here's a look at how each fared over the past few months:
Nick Crawford
Crawford, who is preparing to enter his junior year as the UAB second baseman, recently wrapped up his season in the Cape Cod League by being named to the All-Cape Team. Crawford turned in a strong summer both offensively and defensively for his Hyannis Mets team. At the plate, he hit a team-best .304 while scoring a team-high 23 runs and adding eight stolen bases. In the field, the Cape Cod League All-Star committed just one error in 34 games.
Keith DePew
DePew spent his summer with the Union City Greyhounds of the KIT (Kentucky, Illinois, Tennessee) League, where he joined UAB teammate Danny Volk in helping his team to a second-place league finish. DePew hit .259 for the season with six doubles, one home run and 16 RBI. He now returns to UAB for his sophomore year as an infielder with the Blazers.
Andrew Manning
Manning joined UAB teammate Nick Crawford at the end of the summer as a late-season addition to the Hyannis Mets of the Cape Cod League. In four games with Hyannis, he hit .273 (3-for-11) with a pair of RBI and six walks. Manning is back for his junior year as the UAB third baseman.
Danny Volk
Volk was an honorable mention selection to the KIT (Kentucky, Illinois, Tennessee) League All-Star Team as a member of the Union City Greyhounds. He hit .262 with seven doubles and 16 RBI while teaming with fellow Blazer Keith DePew to help the Greyhounds to a second-place league finish. Volk returns for his redshirt sophomore year as a member of the Blazer outfield.
Trey Vice
Vice spent his summer pitching for the East Alabama Big Train of the Great South League. He helped his team to a 29-8 record, a West Division championship and a second-place finish in the league tournament. Vice pitched in 58 innings over 12 appearances and compiled a 3.05 ERA. He was selected as a West Division All-Star. Vice, a left-hander, returns to UAB for his junior year as a member of the Blazer pitching staff.
Ryan Woolley
Woolley made 10 appearances and started seven games on the mound this summer for the Athletes in Action Fire of the Alaska Baseball League. He managed a record of 4-5 while striking out 29 batters in 36.2 innings of work. Woolley was selected by the Atlanta Braves in June's Major League Baseball Draft but opted to return to school. He has two years of eligibility remaining at UAB.
The Blazers have returned to campus for the fall semester. The team will get into fall practice in October in preparation for the 2010 season. UAB will look to build off a solid finish to the 2009 campaign, which saw the Blazers win four of their final six Conference USA series to finish the year at 31-26.
