Merritt Named To Academic All-District Second Team

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- UAB baseball player Jonathan Merritt has been named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District IV Second Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and announced Thursday.
Merritt is an electrical engineering major at UAB with a 3.33 cumulative GPA. He is a three-time member of the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and was awarded the C-USA Commissioner's Academic Medal in 2007. Last season, Merritt was a member of a UAB team that received the Conference USA Sport Academic Award for posting the highest team GPA in the league.
In his third season as the Blazers' shortstop, Merritt has started 46 games in 2009 and 158 of a possible 165 games in his career. The junior is hitting .337 this season and ranks second in Conference USA with 17 doubles. He has stolen 16 bases in 19 attempts and has served for most of the season as the leadoff man in the UAB lineup.
For his career, the Douglasville, Ga., native ranks in the top 10 in school history in runs scored (141), doubles (38) and stolen bases (44).
Merritt and the Blazers (27-21, 8-9 C-USA) have six games remaining in the 2009 regular season slate. The team travels to New Orleans this weekend for a three-game conference series with Tulane. The Blazers and Green Wave open the series Friday at 6 p.m. (CT) at Tulane's Turchin Stadium.
