BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB men's golfers Adam West and Blake West captured the 26th annual State Four-Ball Championship last weekend at the North River Yacht Club in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The twin brothers, who are currently juniors on the Blazer men's golf team, captured the event for a second consecutive year.
The championship consisted of 65 teams with only the top 16 teams advancing to the round of 16 match play. Adam and Blake qualified as the No. 4 seed after the two-round qualifier and opened with an impressive 5 and 4 win over 13th seeded Talbert Griffin and Woodie Eubanks. The twin brothers then advanced to the quarterfinals where they squeaked by Ben Moody and Stewart Whitt, 1 up.
In the semifinals, the West brothers, who are natives of Montgomery, Ala., advanced to the championship match by defeating Hunter Hamrick and Jeff Dunn, 2 and 1. The duo then sealed their second straight title with a resounding 4 and 3 victory over Alex Balog and Matthew Mahanic.
In capturing their second consecutive four-ball championship, the West brothers become the first back-to-back champions in the annual event since Benjamin Dowdey and Joe Terrell won two consecutive titles in 1988 and 1989.
