BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - More than a dozen women employees from the UAB Athletics Department devoted their time to the local Birmingham Habitat for Humanity program this past Tuesday. The outreach was in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity's Women Build efforts.
In the days leading up to and surrounding the recent Mother's Day holiday, Habitat for Humanity recruits women volunteers to help build homes across the nation. The National Women Build Week, which was sponsored by Lowe's, was created for women who want to learn construction skills and make a difference by building houses.
The UAB Athletic Department volunteers' time and efforts went to the construction of a house for Birmingham-native Katisha Cook and her three children, Eric (16), Nakey (12) and Katlyn (5).
Katisha works as a Patient Care Assistant at Choice Home Care Specialist. She and her children are members of the Doers of the Word Christian Outreach Ministries Church in Birmingham, where Katisha serves on the Usher Board.
"Thank you so much to Habitat and my sponsors," Katisha said. "This will give me and my children a brighter future, hope for tomorrow, and a feeling of security knowing that we have a permanent place that we can call home. I also tell my children and myself that anything worth having is worth working for. I am so excited to begin a new and better life for my family."
