MADISON, Miss. - The UAB men's golf team battled high winds and cool temperatures during the opening 36 holes of the Reunion Intercollegiate, closing the day in a tie for ninth overall at 622 (309-313). The Blazers were led by senior Zack Sucher, who will enter Tuesday's final 18 holes in a tie for sixth overall after carding a six-over par 150.
"I am disappointed with the way we played," UAB head coach Alan Kaufman said. "It was very tough to play in this type of weather against a strong field, but every team played in the same conditions. We made too many mistakes all day. We are going to continue to push through it and give it our best shot on Tuesday."
Sucher, who came into the tournament ranked No. 79 in the nation, enters the final round in a tie for sixth with LSU's Clayton Rotz (76-74), after carding rounds of 74 and 76. Vanderbilt's Adam Hofmann leads the field with a one-under 143, while Andrew Landry of Arkansas is a stroke back with a 144. The duo were the only golfers to finish the 36 holes at par or below.
Juniors Blake West (77-78) and John Darby (77-78) are in a tie for 29th after each carded a 155 during Monday's two rounds. Junior Adam West closed with a 162 (81-81) to end the day in a tie for 57th, while redshirt freshman Blake Watts rounded out UAB in 67th with a 165 (83-82).
Only five rounds came in under 300 for the teams, with LSU posting a 596 (297-299¬) to lead Arkansas (297-302/599) by three. Vanderbilt is in third with a 306-296¬602. North Florida and Southern Mississippi are tied for fourth with a 612.
The Blazers are playing in their final tune up before the Conference USA Championship (April 19-21) in Orlando, Fla.
The final round of the Reunion Intercollegiate will tee off Tuesday beginning at 8 a.m. from the first and 10 tees.
