GREENVILLE, N.C. ----- The UAB men's tennis team won the doubles point and then took three of the first four singles matches to finish en route to a 4-3 victory over Southern Miss here Sunday at the Conference USA Shootout.
With the victory, the Blazers (8-9) were able to salvage a win in the four-team league event after losing to host East Carolina (4-3) Friday and UCF (6-1) yesterday.
After winning the doubles point, UAB won straight-set matches at No. 4, 5 and 6 singles to claim the match. Alex Emery clinched the match for the Blazers with his 6-1, 7-6 win at No. 4 singles over USM's Diego Machuca.
"It was good to get a win today," said UAB head coach Derek Tarr. "We felt like we should have won our match against East Carolina (Friday), so it was important to come away with a win.
"We came out and played well in doubles and carried that momentum into singles. It was a much better effort overall."
UAB won the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and 2 positions. The No. 3 match was suspended after the Blazers took the No. 1 and 2 matches. At No. 1, the duo of Emery and Brian Ly defeated the Golden Eagles' Patricio Alvarado and Markus Wessinghage, 8-6.
The Blazers' team of Dennis Ehrlich and Slawomir Szeremeta was an 8-2 winner over USM's Jan Burmeister and Strate Krstevski at No. 2 doubles.
In addition to Emery's singles win at No. 4, UAB also got singles victories at No. 5 by Tyrone Ewels as he downed Krstevski, 6-3, 6-0, and at No. 6 as Thomas Petrich beat Oscar Machuca, 6-0, 6-3.
Southern Miss (8-9) got on the board with a win at No. 1 singles as Alvarado downed Dan Cornei, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1.
With the match clinched by UAB after the Blazers had taken a 4-1 lead, the format for the contests at No. 2 and 3 singles became a super tie-breaker for the third and deciding set. The Golden Eagles were able to win both of those.
At No. 2, Andrew Poole defeated Ly at No. 2, 6-7, 6-2, 10-4. Meanwhile at the No. 3 singles spot, USM's Domagoj Anic outlasted UAB freshman Daniel Moser, 6-7, 6-2, 10-4.
UAB's next action will come on Wednesday when the Blazers play host to Troy at the Brook Highland Racquet Club at 2:00 p.m.
