Troy Sweeps Friday Doubleheader With UAB

TROY, Ala. - The UAB softball team (17-32, 6-15 C-USA) fell twice to Troy University here on Friday night. The Blazers dropped the first contest, 4-1, before being shut out in the nightcap, 4-0.
"They came out and were the more aggressive team," said UAB head coach Marla Townsend. "We made some good adjustments throughout both games but there were too many strikes that we should have been swinging at. We came up short tonight."
FIRST GAME
Troy posted the first the first run of the game in the bottom of third after a RBI single down the left line by Hillary Hughes for a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth inning, Laura Callaway was able to reach safely on a fielder's choice and Cameron Skates was able to move Callaway to third after a two-out double down the left field line. But UAB fouled out before any runs could be plated.
The Trojans were able to put one more run one the board in the bottom of the fifth after two hits and a sacrifice fly.
UAB was able to cut the Trojans' lead in half, 2-1, after Catherine Douglass reached safely on a single and was brought home after Callaway double into the gap in left centerfield in the top of the sixth inning.
Troy added two runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth to take a 4-1 lead into the seventh inning.
Kayla Harris (2-4) earned the loss after allowing two runs in five innings of work. She struck out two batters, walked two and allowed five hits. Sara Swespton wrapped up the game for the Blazers, giving up two runs on three hits in one inning pitched.
Allison Moore improved to 12-6 on the season after pitching all seven innings, striking out 11.
The Blazers scattered seven hits, led by Martina Landrum who recorded two hits in three at bats.
SECOND GAME
Troy took the lead early in the second game after scoring one run on two hits in the first inning.
The Trojans were able to score two more runs in the second inning after Felicia Hammer hit a two-run home run to left field for a 3-0 lead.
The Blazers struggled at the plate through the first four innings, striking out six times.
Troy padded their score in the fourth, 4-0, with a RBI-double by Hammer.
UAB had a rough night at the plate, recording four hits and leaving five on base.
Amber Torres earned the loss and fell to 7-6 on the season. In four innings, she allowed four runs on six hits and struck out one.
Ashlyn Williams (24-11) earned the shutout victory after pitching all six innings with 11 strikeouts on the night.
Next week the Blazers will wrap up their 2009 Conference USA schedule as they head to Memphis, Tenn. for a three-game series with the Tigers. The series will begin at 3 p.m. CT on Tuesday with a doubleheader and closeout on Wednesday with a single game at 3 p.m. CT.
