My apologies for the delayed update. It has been a little crazy for me this past week, but it has been a good week. We did lose the make-up game with Alabama on Monday. A double that hit chalk just beyond the first base bag cleared the bases in the first inning. I personally think it was kind of lucky, but that's just my opinion.
This past weekend was much better than our Monday mishap. After a long....long bus ride to Marshall we settled into the hotel for a couple hours of sleep. Marshall uses a minor league field that had night games all weekend, which meant early games for us. We won on Friday 6 to 4. The score was flopped on Saturday in a game we lost with a 3-run 8th inning.
Sunday was an event-filled afternoon. A strong performance by both our pitching staff and our offense left us ahead 8 - 1 in the 5th inning. In the top of 6 Digger walked and Allen bunted him to second. Marshall did not particularly like the strategy. I guess they thought the game was out of reach for them and we were trying to add on runs to make it a more convincing win, but with metal bats you never know what can happen. They were saying not so nice things at Allen as he ran off the field. The umpire gave them a warning and then Merritt comes up to bat. First pitch squares him up right between the shoulder blades. The pitcher was immediately ejected and their coach sprinted on to the field. He had a few more words for the umpire, but that was the end of the incident. It was pretty intense there for a while. After they scored 5 runs during the 6th and 7th we tacked on 3 more runs to make it a 13 - 6 victory.
I feel like we could have easily come out of there with three wins, but getting two made the 9 hour bus ride much more enjoyable.
On a side note, the senior athlete banquet was Monday night. Kyle, Ben, Cody, John Volk, Coach Shoop and I were all there to watch James give a solid speech. It started off a little shaky, but a very, very strong finish by the male academic athlete of the year, James Oliver....as if anybody didn't know he would get that award.
This weekend we will be at Southern Miss. They are yet another good Conference USA team, but I feel like we are capable of putting together another good weekend. Until next time, Go Blazers!
