Blazers Honored At Annual Senior Banquet

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB Athletics Department hosted its annual Senior Banquet this past Monday evening at the Wynfrey Hotel. The event serves as a time to honor and celebrate the 2009 senior class and their accomplishments during their Blazer careers.
In addition to handing out the senior gifts, individual post-eligibility scholarships were awarded throughout the evening. Those awards included:
Gene Bartow Scholarship: Margareta Jakovac (Synchronized Swimming) of Zagreb, Croatia
Dorsey-Gallichio Endowed Athletic Scholarship: Allen Aubin (Baseball) of Mobile, Ala.
Lillyan Fahy Scholarship: Nevena Stefanov (Volleyball) of Belgrade, Serbia
Mervyn Goldstein Endowed Scholarship: Brianna Berry (Women's Basketball) of Flint, Mich.
Barbara & Jerry Hallerman Endowed Scholarship: Lawrence Kinnard (Men's Basketball) of Memphis, Tenn.
Ralph Holmes Memorial Endowed Award: Ben Drust (Baseball) of Carterville, Ill.
George "Snoozy" Jones Scholarship: Aaron Johns (Football) of Thomasville, Ala.
National Alumni Society Women's Athletic Scholarship: Andrea Rogers (Softball) of Pasco, Wash.
Old Boys Scholarship: Derek Rios (Men's Soccer) of Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada
Harry "The Hat" Walker Memorial Scholarship: Kyle Roberson (Baseball) of Clay, Ala.
Jerry D. Young Memorial Scholarship: Brian Ly (Men's Tennis) of Sydney, Australia
Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Award: Rodney Bivens, Jr. (Football) of Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Also honored during the night were James Oliver (baseball) and Margareta Jakovac (synchronized swimming), who were named the Male and Female Athlete Scholar Athletes Of The Year, respectively, for the highest GPAs of the senior class.
In addition, UAB Athletics named a trio of Blazer supporters as Honorary Letterwinners. Keith & Mary Bowers and the late William R. Ireland Sr. were all recognized for their years of contributions and support to the UAB Athletic Department.
