Women's Basketball Plays Host To Memphis Saturday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's basketball team will take on the Memphis Tigers for the second time this season on Saturday at 6 p.m. CT at Bartow Arena. The Blazers defeated the Tigers, 71-62, earlier this year in Memphis, Tenn.
Saturday will mark the 42nd meeting between the two programs, with Memphis holding a 24-17 advantage in the all-time series. UAB has won the past seven meetings, including a nine-point win over the Tigers on Jan. 4 in Memphis.
UAB has won its last two outings and has an overall record of 9-13 and a 4-5 mark in Conference USA. The Blazers won a pair of home games over Tulane and UTEP last weekend.
Senior guard Britney Jones continues to lead the Blazers on the court with a league-best 18.0 ppg, which also ranks 34th in the nation. Jones is also contributing 4.2 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.0 steals per outing this season.
Guards Fatiha Salaam and Amanda Peterson are also averaging double figures for UAB, scoring 11.0 ppg and 10.9 ppg, respectively. Junior forward Tamika Dukes is putting up 8.9 ppg on the year and leads the Blazers on the boards with 7.2 rpg.
Memphis comes into Saturday's game with an 8-14 record overall and a 1-8 league record. The Tigers' last outing resulted in a 59-44 loss to Tulane last Saturday.
Senior guard Paris Leonard paces Memphis and ranks second in C-USA in scoring behind UAB's Jones with 16.9 ppg. Leonard is also chipping in 4.6 rpg, 1.5 apg and a team-best 2.3 spg.
Joining Leonard in leading the Tigers this season is fellow senior Ashley Thornton. Thornton, a native of Pinson, Ala., is scoring 10.1 ppg and pulling down a team-high 8.5 rpg on the year.
