BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- James Oliver of the Blazer baseball team has been selected as the UAB Scholar-Athlete of the week. Oliver and his Blazer teammates will take the field for the first time in 2009 this weekend when they host Radford in a three-game series at Young Memorial Field.
Oliver, a senior pitcher, has been a standout in the classroom throughout his college career. He has carried a 4.0 GPA at UAB since transferring from Birmingham-Southern following his redshirt freshman season, and he owns an overall cumulative GPA of 3.84.
Oliver was one of four UAB baseball players to post a perfect 4.0 GPA during the recent fall semester, joining teammates Keith DePew, Mikael Saway and Ryan Woolley. As a team, the Blazers compiled an overall GPA of 3.11, marking their second consecutive semester better than 3.0 as a team.
On the playing field, Oliver will be a key component of the UAB pitching staff again in 2009. Last season, he pitched a total of 50.0 innings and earned four wins on the mound. He has appeared in 43 games over his college career and owns a career ERA of 5.51.
Oliver and the Blazers are slated to open the season Friday at 3 p.m. against Radford. UAB will play 13 of its first 18 games this season at home at Young Memorial Field.
