Women's Basketball Falls At SMU, 81-51

DALLAS ----- SMU connected on 50 percent of its shots and had 11 players score as the Mustangs handed the UAB women's basketball team an 81-51 defeat Sunday afternoon at Dallas. The Mustangs were led by Brittany Gilliam with 13 points, while the Blazers were paced by Tamika Dukes and Amanda Peterson with 12 points each.
UAB falls to 10-15 on the year and 5-7 in Conference USA. SMU improves its overall record to 16-9, including a 9-3 mark in league play, second-best in C-USA.
The Blazers shot just 26.1 percent in the first half and turned the ball over 10 times as they got down 41-19 at halftime. SMU continued its sharp shooting in the second half and maintained the lead throughout the game, eventually winning by a count of 81-51.
UAB shot 30.9 percent for the game, including going just 2-of-17 (11.8 percent) from three-point range. The Blazers hit 15-of-20 (75.0 percent) from the free throw line, led by Peterson with 5-of-7 from the charity stripe.
Senior guard Britney Jones joined Dukes and Peterson in scoring double-digits for UAB with 11 points. Freshman forward Shelly Breaux scored five points and grabbed a team-best eight boards for the Blazers.
SMU's 50.0 percent shooting came on 29-of-58 from the field, including 6-of-14 (42.9 percent) from beyond the arc. The Mustangs made 23 trips to the free throw line, sinking 17 of their tries (73.9 percent).
Gilliam paced SMU's 11 scorers with 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Jillian Samuels tallied 12 points and Heidi Brandenburg added 10 on the day. Delisha Wills led the Mustangs on the boards with eight, accompanied by four points, one assist and one block.
The Blazers will be back in action on Friday when they host the Marshall Thundering Herd. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT at Bartow Arena.
