Blazer Tennis Team Falls To Mississippi State, 5-2

STARKVILLE, Miss. ----- The UAB men's tennis team dropped its third consecutive match to a ranked opponent Sunday as No. 52 Mississippi State handed the 75th-ranked Blazers a 5-2 defeat at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
UAB (1-3) got its only two wins in the match at the No. 1 and No. 5 singles positions. UAB senior Brian Ly downed MSU's Ryan Farlow, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 1 and tied the match at 1-1 after State claimed the doubles point. Junior Alex Emery outlasted the Bulldogs' Antonio Lastre at No. 5 singles in the final match on the court, 7-6, 3-6, 1-0.
The Bulldogs (2-2), who came into the match with losses to a pair of top 10-ranked teams (No. 9 Ole Miss and No. 6 Southern California), won the doubles with a sweep in three matches. At the No. 1 position, MSU's Chris Doerr and Tanner Stump beat UAB's 29th-ranked duo of Ly and Emery, 8-5.
The Blazers lost a tight matchup at No. 2 doubles as Dennis Ehrlich and Slawomir Szeremeta fell to Lastre and Daniel Sanchez, 8-7. State was an 8-4 winner at No. 3 doubles as Louis Cant and Artem Ilyushin defeated Tyrone Ewels and Daniel Moser.
Doerr gave MSU a lead it would not relinquish as he grabbed the team's second point with a Straight-set win at No. 6 singles, defeating Moser, 6-4, 6-1. Sanchez made it 3-1 MSU as he won over UAB's Dan Cornei at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-4.
Cant clinched the match by winning the fourth team point after a tight first set with the Blazers' Thomas Petrich as he took a 7-5, 6-0 victory at the No. 4 spot. Ilyushin gave the Bulldogs their fifth point with a 6-2, 7-6 (4) win at No. 3 over Ehrlich.
