BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB is scheduled to have several athletic teams visit the Birmingham VA Medical Center as part of the National Salute to Hospitalized Veterans week. The Blazer women's golf team made the trip on Thursday, while the cross country, track & field, women's tennis and volleyball teams are slated to visit on Friday.
National Salute to Hospitalized Veterans week is an annual event. It started Feb. 9 and runs through Feb. 13. The event was created as an official VA program in 1978.
The theme for this year's event is "Heartfelt Thanks To America's Heroes". The purpose of this national program is to pay tribute to and express appreciation to America's veterans, increase community awareness of the role of the VA medical facility and to encourage citizens to visit hospitalized veterans and to become involved as volunteers as their local VA.
UAB is participating in the event for the fourth consecutive year as a part of the ongoing community service initiatives by the UAB Athletic Department.
