BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Senior defender Danielle Blair was named the Conference USA Spirit of Service Award honoree for UAB, as announced by Commissioner Britton Banowsky on Wednesday. Blair's service has consisted of lending a hand in the C-USA canned food drive, assisting at the Ronald McDonald house, helping at local elementary schools and volunteering as a coach for a local soccer club.
The C-USA Spirit of Service Award is designed to recognize the community service efforts of the league's student-athletes, based upon significant community service, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport. In addition to her service to the community, Blair was a model of excellence on the pitch and in the classroom, earning ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America honors while playing in all 21 matches for the Blazers.
The Spirit of Service award will be presented three times throughout the season, with today's honorees representing Conference USA's fall sports: football, soccer, volleyball and cross country. One recipient is selected for each school in each of the three seasons.
