Hey Blazer Fans,
Well, it was another great week for UAB Soccer! Nice weather allowed us to get a couple good training sessions in before one of the most important games of the year...our Wednesday night Senior Night match-up with C-USA opponent South Carolina. This was obviously a huge game for our eight seniors, but it was also a crucial game in the C-USA Regular Season title race. No one really had to emphasize the importance of the game though, because the whole team was already very aware. Anticipation built for a few days, and even more on game day, as we went through a few ceremonial Senior Night activities. First, we lay out a banner in the locker room, which has already been signed by every senior that has ever been on one of Coach Getman's UAB teams, for the current senior class to sign. This banner is hung up by the entrance of West Campus Field. Next, the starting line-up is announced, excluding the seniors. They are each introduced individually, as well as a list of awards and recognitions they've earned. Finally, time to take care of business. Anthony King got the scoring underway at the midpoint of the first half with a spectacular shot to the far post upper corner, and we took a 1 nil lead into halftime. Senior Two-Boys Gumede and sophomore Babayele Sodade added to that tally in the second half as we finished the game with a commanding 3-0 win, and regained our spot at #1 in C-USA. This was a great result, and we were all glad that we could help our seniors win their final regular season game at West Campus Field.
Next up we had Alabama A&M on Sunday. This is a team of very talented individuals, and it is always a battle. We all talked about maintaining our intensity and focus going into this game, since it was a break from C-USA competition. Luckily, we were able to do this, and battled out a 1-0 win on the road. Junior Curtis Ushedo scored the game-winning goal with an assist from Michal Mravec.
For his defensive efforts on the week and scoring the lone goal on Sunday, Curt was recognized as the C-USA Defensive Player of the Week!
Up next for us is a HUGE away game at Marshall. It will be the biggest game of the year for us, because if we win, we claim at least a share of the C-USA Regular Season Championship! If we win and Tulsa drops points to UCF, we will be the lone C-USA Champion, and will get to host the C-USA Tournament for the second time in three years!!! So hopefully everything works out, and we will see everyone back at West Campus Field next week!
Go Blazers!!!
