MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -Joe Webb passed for 378 yards, threw three touchdowns and rushed for another score to lead UAB to a 31-21 win over Memphis on Saturday.
Webb, who was 18-for-25 passing, ran for 52 yards on 21 carries for the Blazers (5-5, 4-2 Conference USA). The win was the third in a row for the Blazers who travel to East Carolina next Saturday before closing out the regular season with a home game Nov. 28 vs. UCF.
"This was a big win for our guys," said UAB head coach Neil Callaway. "I thought we played hard, but we didn't play smart at times."
The game was tied at 7-7 with 14:03 left in the second quarter on Curtis Steele's 11-yard rushing score for the Tigers (2-8, 1-5).
But UAB pulled away with 24 straight points - Webb threw a 77-yard touchdown pass to Nick Adams and a 26-yard passing score to Frantrell Forrest, Josh Zahn kicked a 27-yard field goal and Forrest caught a 12-yard TD from Webb.
Forrest finished with seven catches for 129 yards for UAB.
Memphis' plan to stack the line and take away UAB's rushing game that came in ranked No. 7 in the country worked well most of the game. However, the Tigers may not have been ready for the Blazers' potent passing game Saturday.
"We've got to be able to do that (be effective through the air when the rushing game is slowed down) if we're going to be successful," said Callaway. "People that watch us play, probably the first thing they're going to do is load the box up and try to not let Joe beat them running the football. So, we've got to be able to throw the ball. I think we did a nice job doing that today."
Memphis' Steele led his team with 107 yards on 20 carries, including a 7-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Will Hudgens passed for 333 yards and was sacked four times.
