Men's Golf Finishes In 14th At Gary Koch Intercollegiate

TAMPA, Fla. - The UAB men's golf team carded a team total of 877 (287-287-303) to finish in 14th overall at the Gary Koch Intercollegiate on Sunday. The 15-team field featured five teams ranked in the top-25 and 10 teams ranked among the top-50 in the nation.
The Blazers were paced by true freshman Philip Kaiser who finished the three-round event with a career-low of two-under par 214. After opening the event with back-to-back rounds of two-under par 70, Kaiser carded a final round 74 to close the event in a tie for 22nd overall.
Senior John Darby was UAB's next-highest finisher, finishing tied for 43rd overall with a 54-hole score of 219 (72-71-76). Senior Adam West tied for 56th overall with a 222 (72-72-78), while senior Blake West (73-75-77) and sophomore Jason Shufflebotham (75-74-76) each carded a 225 to close play tied for 64th overall.
Auburn's Kyle Kopsick recorded a new 54-hole individual tournament record with a 15-under par 201 to claim individual medalist honors. The previous record of 205 was set by Florida's Matt Every in 2003.
Seventh-ranked Florida State (834) claimed the team title, setting a new tournament record in the process. Texas Tech (850), ranked 35th in the country, placed second, followed by No. 31 Virginia (852), No. 8 Florida (852) and No. 11 North Florida (854), which rounded out the top five.
The Blazers will return to action next weekend when they compete at the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate on Oct. 10-11 at Old Overton Golf Course in Birmingham.
