BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Two UAB golfers finished among the top 30 on Tuesday to lead the men's golf team at the David Toms Intercollegiate, the final tournament of the fall season for the Blazers. UAB closed the two-day, 54-hole event in 11th place overall with a team total of 872 (286-289-297), which was its lowest team score of the fall.
Senior John Darby led all UAB golfers on Tuesday's final 18 holes with a 1-under par 70. Darby, a native of Birmingham, Ala., closed the event tied for 21st overall with a 1-over par 214 (71-73-70). His tournament score set a 54-hole career-low, besting his former mark of 217 set during the 2009 C-USA Championship. Additionally, Darby's 21st-place finish marked the third best tournament result of his UAB career. It is also the second time in five tournaments this season Darby has been UAB' top finisher.
Senior Blake West, who was in a tie for 12th entering the final round, carded a 76 on Tuesday and finished tied for 28th overall with a 3-over par 216 (71-69-76). Similar to Darby, West also set a new watershed tournament mark, besting his previous career-low of 218, which he set at the 2008 San Francisco Intercollegiate.
Sophomore Blake Watts closed play on the par 71, 6,849-yard Country Club of Louisiana course tied for 38th overall with a 5-over par 218 (71-72-75). Senior Adam West finished tied for 63rd with a 226 (75-75-76), while junior Jason Shufflebotham rounded out the UAB lineup in 65th overall with a 228 (73-76-79).
Tournament host and 34th-ranked LSU captured the tournament title with an 8-under par 844. The Tigers won the inaugural event by one stroke over second-place No. 40 Kent State (845) and No. 29 North Florida (845). Ole Miss (849) closed play in fourth overall, while No. 47 Southeastern Louisiana and Rice tied for fifth with an 851. In all, six teams in the 14-team field were ranked among the top 50 in the nation.
With the fall season now complete, the Blazers return to action Feb. 13-14 when they compete at the Gator Invitational in the first event of the spring campaign.
