Hey Blazer fans! Your Blazer volleyball ladies traveled in style this weekend. We left Friday on a jet plane to New Orleans, Louisiana to face Tulane. We were all business while we were in New Orleans; As your Blazer volleyball team, we realize that at this point in our season, we need to focus and keep our minds on the task at hand - winning games for our school. While it would have been a blast to enjoy some of the jazz and blues music, we only caught a glimpse of Bourbon Street as we headed to the gym for our match. I am sad to report that Tulane knocked us off our game quickly. We lost in three rapid succession games. To say that we were disappointed was an understatement. As we went back to our hotel that evening, we all began to discuss the unspoken reality of where we find ourselves. Either we begin to get the job done or our season most definitely will not be one that shows our potential or our skill as volleyball players.
The next morning, we headed to the airport once again to head to El Paso, Texas to face UTEP. We arrived Saturday afternoon and headed to the gym for a much-needed practice at 6:00. We blew off some steam and our disappointment as we prepared for Sunday's match. That evening, our coaches treated us to dinner at an authentic Mexican restaurant. As El Paso is close to the Mexican border (we could see it from the restaurant), the food tasted very different than the Mexican food we chow down on in Birmingham. The music was loud and booming; there was even a mariachi band that made all of us laugh. The evening was definitely a way to put our Tulane defeat behind us and get ready for the next day's match.
After loading up on carbs at breakfast Sunday morning at our hotel, we headed to UTEP's gym. We were pretty fired up! We won the first game, much to our delight, but UTEP took the second. We came back and took the third game, and we thought we had it in us to finish the match. We had decided prior to the match that losing was not an option! As a team, we really felt like we needed to put an end to our recent string of losses. In the final game, we were eight points away and in the huddle, we declared, "We are eight points away from changing our season and making our season turn out the way we want it to end." We shouted, "Blazers" and went back out on the court and finished the game. With the win, we claimed victory on the match, and snapped our losing streak.
On Friday, we face UCF at Bartow. After all our recent road trips, we are excited to be back on our home court. We can't wait to see you all in the stands cheering us on! We especially appreciate our fellow students who cheer for us, both on and off the court. Don't give up on us Blazer fans! We want to win, and we are working very hard to make it happen! I cannot wait to see you at Bartow!
