Whew! What a weekend. We headed out for Dallas on Thursday morning for one of our longest bus rides of the year! Luckily, our coaches arranged for us to have sleeper buses, which give us the opportunity to do everything from sleep (every college student's favorite hobby) to studying for upcoming tests and writing research papers. While in Texas, we ate at a yummy restaurant called Cheddar's. The food was great, but the friendship and team building was even better. We had a practice at SMU and felt like we were ready to take on SMU on Friday night. While we arrived in Dallas with great anticipation, we were dismissed quickly by SMU, much to our chagrin. We really wanted to walk away with the victory, but we just could not finish the first two games (which were close), and unfortunately, we were shut down quickly in the third game. After losing this important match, I think our team breathed a collective sigh of relief as we headed to Tulsa to play our next match on Sunday. Surely, things would be better in Oklahoma.
Oklahoma is an interesting state, but to be honest, we spent a lot of our time there and on the bus ride to Tulsa contemplating where we are as a team. After last year's success, we are still settling into the realization that we lost some seniors who were very important to our game. As a team, we have come to the realization that this is a new year, and we have to build on our strengths. We have a lot of potential and skill, but our challenge is to harness it and fight with everything we've got. At Tulsa, we faced another disappointing defeat as we lost three straight games in a row. We limped back to the bus and began the long drive back to Birmingham filled with disappointmemt.
Sometimes, volleyball, like life, can be disappointing. What separates winners from losers is the ability to dust yourself off after a defeat. To face your next challenge with boldness, and that is exactly what your Blazers intend to do. We intend to find the good in what happened this weekend, ask ourselves some tough questions, and give it all that we have got in the gym this week. Next weekend we hit the road again and head to Tulsa and UTEP. Pray for us and continue to cheer us on. Your support means more to us and sustains during the low moments. We are working hard to represent UAB well, and we know that the best of our season is yet to come!
